Sarah Chalke stars in hit US comedy Scrubs, which Gareth McLean of the Guardian called a “splendid show” that’s “laugh-out-loud funny”.
Set in a California teaching hospital where patients and staff vye to out-weird each other, the heart of Scrubs is the on-again off-again romance of intern JD (Zach Braff) and Dr Elliott Reid (Sarah Chalke).
“Braff’s wide-eyed insecurity serves him perfectly as the struggling intern,” said Neil Queen of The Times, “while oddball support characters and tightrope-walking scripts balance the satirical with the crude.”
Season three of the Emmy Award-winning series starts with Elliott suffering a personality crisis – and deciding to tackle it with a complete makeover.
What Scott Weinberg of DVDTalk.com called “one of the very finest ensembles ever gathered for a network comedy” delivers up 22 episodes of medical mayhem, culminated in the wedding of JD’s best buddy, Turk (Donald Faison, pictured above) to Nurse Carla (Judy Reyes).
Paul Burreil of The Trades.com hailed Scrubs as, “willing to go where few shows dared, turning to slapstick and pratfalls to inject humour into an otherwise serious situation.”
Particularly memorable are guest appearances by Michael J Fox – brilliant as the obsessive-compulsive Dr Kevin Casey – and Brendan Fraser in an Emmy-nominated episode playing the cancer-stricken brother of the acid-tongued Dr Cox (John C McGinley).
“Scrubs has combined slapstick and sophisticated comedy with earnest and devastating drama,” said Variety’s Jon Weisman, “like no other medical show since the days of M.A.S.H.”
