Ugly Betty, a prime-time take on The Devil Wears Prada scenario (plain but smart girl working at a high-fashion mag), was Channel 4’s surprise hit of 2007.

“It has the confidence to be different, to look different and to celebrate difference,” reckoned Benji Wilson of The Telegraph.

With Latino superstar Salma Hayek as executive producer, Ugly Betty tells the soapy but smart story of a geeky office junior thrown to the chic sharks at New York fashion bible Mode magazine.

Massively popular in the US, leading actress America Ferrera has won Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild awards for her portrayal of Betty Suarez.

Betty’s honesty and integrity invariably overcomes the evil schemes of creative director Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams), and compensates for the ineptitude of her playboy cum editor-in-chief boss, Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius).

There’s also help from her only friend: seamstress Christina, played by Ashley Jensen, a familiar face from Ricky Gervais’s Extras.

Kathryn Flett of The Observer complained that, “even the subplots mostly just amount to a bunch of scripted emoticons.”

Ferrera, however, has been named Hispanic woman of the year by The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard magazines, whose publisher John Kilcullen hailed her as, “a leader for all women, but especially those in the Hispanic community.”

According to The Observer it’s “America’s best new comedy - far from being cloying or saccharine it is intensely likeable and funny.”
