The Mighty Boosh (series 1) “I can’t get enough of their absurd eccentricity,” said Simon Horsford of the Daily Telegraph. “The dialogue, the bizarre incidents and the cool costumes ensure this comedy’s place among the truly surreal.”

Nothing could have prepared the British public for the arrival of The Mighty Boosh on BBC3 in 2004.

In the space of four years, it has rocketed from cultish obscurity to a point where its stars, Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt (pictured above), are comedy heroes.

“The setting, a run-down zoo in a parallel dimension, offers ample scope for interstellar surreality,” said Ed Potton of The Times.

“But it’s the sotto voce exchanges between Fielding and Barratt that give the show its gentle brilliance.”

Fielding plays the cool, self-assured narcissist Vince Noir, while his long-time stand-up partner Barratt is Howard Moon, an anxious funk-jazz devotee.

Their interplay with zoo co-workers Naboo and Bob Fossil is often brilliantly fanciful. Fielding calls the show “a psychedelic Open All Hours.”

“Fielding’s ability to hopscotch his way through the realms of the fantastic, nonsensical and downright bizarre,” said Sam Jones of the Guardian, “has made him one of Britain’s most recognisable cult comedians.”

Vince and Howard encounter unforgettable characters including The Black Frost, The Ape Of Death and The Spirit Of Jazz in the course of their extraordinary adventures in Monkey Hell, The Arctic Tundra, The Jungle Room and elsewhere.

Amy Raphael of the Observer summed up The Mighty Boosh’s appeal as “a homemade, DIY, punk humour that knows few boundaries.”
