SPOOKS IS coming to an end, wrapping things up after 10 magnificent outings. This is excellent news for fans of nice round numbers, but quite the opposite for devotees of the show. A show that hasn’t been afraid to rip the carpet of expectation from under your feet when you were least expecting it, bucking television conventions that dictate that the good guys always come out on top. Brilliant stuff. Here are some of the finest moments from episodes gone by. If you haven’t seen it, be warned, these are MASSIVE SPOILERS.
The Deep Fat Fryer Scene (Series One, Episode Two)
The scene that really put Spooks on the map. Poor Lisa Faulkner draws the short straw and finds herself plunging head-first towards a deep fat fryer. If this were a Bond film, there would have been a quip about “salt and vinegar with that?”. But it’s not. It’s Spooks.
Ros Stops Nuclear War (Series Eight, Episode Eight)
Cold Feet actress Hermione Norris absolutely shone as Ros Myers in the show. Sadly, she came a cropper when a hotel went up in flames at the end of the eight series. On the plus side, she’d just pretty much saved the world from a nuclear war. Every cloud etc…
Colin Wells Goes To The Woods (Series Five, Episode One)
Don’t be fooled into thinking that an IT job on Spooks would be a safe way to make a living. Poor Colin gets rumbled by some crooked MI6 agents, and finds himself dangling from a tree. Bit harsh.
Spooks Predicts 7/7 Bombings (Series Four)
In a chilling example of art reflecting life, the fourth series of Spooks found terrorists planning to bomb central London. The series had been filmed prior to the 7/7 bombings and was very nearly pulled before everyone presumably remembered that it was a TV show and meant no real harm.
Rule One when confronted by a man with a gun is not to wind him up
Adam Bids An Explosive Farewell (Series Seven, Episode One)
Spooks heartthrob Adam, played by Rupert Penry-Jones, saves a Remembrance Day memorial service from a car bomb by nicking the thing and driving it away. Almost the exact equivalent of jumping on a grenade. And the same outcome, sadly. The car explodes just as he’s about to make his getaway. RIP Adam. Gone but not forgotten.
Danny Goads The Bad Guys (Series Three, Episode 10)
Rule One when confronted by a man with a gun is not to wind him up. When Danny and Fiona are taken prisoner with only one of them guaranteed to see another day, Danny gallantly throws the rule book out of the window, goads a terrorist and gets one to the head for his troubles. A heroic death.
Connie’s Bra Is Fierce! (Series Seven, Episode Seven)
Connie might have looked like a kindly librarian, but actually she was a mole. A mole! A vicious mole who casually reached into her bra when Ben wasn’t looking and pulled out a length of wire. She then proceeded to slit his throat. Ouch!
Spooks is on at 9pm on BBC1 on Sunday evenings. Series 9 of Spooks is available On Demand.
