#28: Anna Friel – the interview

You’ve now become a well-known TV actress in both the US and the UK. What’s your favourite TV show?
I watched all of 24 and I got totally hooked. I absolutely love The Sopranos and I watched the first few series of Desperate Housewives.

In Pushing Daisies you have an American accent. Was it hard to get it right?
When I work, I stay in my American accent all day. I’ve got enough to think about without having to think about my accent.

Your character is a different kind of role for you. What’s the appeal?
She’s possibly the most uplifting character I’ve ever played as I usually play dramatic roles. So this is something that’s new to me.

How do you explain the show to people?
That’s the most difficult thing, particularly in England. I’m, like, ‘It’s about someone who dies, and this guy touches them, and if he touches them again they’re dead forever.’ It sounds kind of weird. It’s one of those shows that you really, really do have to watch. I just say it’s a modern romantic fairy tale.

What do you like about the show?
There’s a need for something uplifting to remind people that there are nice things out there. It’s a very funny show.

If you could bring one person back to life, who would it be?
Ghandi. I think that he might have a few words of wisdom that could save the world from the state it’s currently in.
