FROM 80s Eurovision to The X Factor, chart-toppers from various eras are bravely taking part in the new series of Popstar To Operastar. Watch it on Freeview – Sunday evenings on ITV1 – or catch up with the latest show now on Replay.
The X Factor’s 2009 winner, Joe McElderry, looks like a strong contender for another ITV talent show title, and the judges were impressed with his take on Una Furtiva Lagrima, from Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, on the opening show. It’s certainly a long way from singing songs from The Lion King in front of Simon Cowell.
Joe’s up against some top pop talent, though, including soul diva Jocelyn Brown, Erasure frontman Andy Bell, former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton, Steps singer Claire Richards, and Bucks Fizz star and Eurovision winner, Cheryl Baker.
Presenter Myleene Klass was a classically trained musician turned pop star – remember Hear’Say? – so she knows something about radically switching musical styles.
Mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins and tenor Rolando Villazón will deliver their verdicts on the performances. But, of course, it’s the viewers’ votes that count – so catch the show live on Freeview to have your say in who stays in the show.
