While shrinks have been decent supporting acts in TV drama for some time, the amazing Gabriel Byrne puts the profession centre stage in the brilliantly addictive, award-winning In Treatment, on Vision TV now.

Another thoroughbred from the HBO stable, In Treatment follows Byrne’s Dr Paul Weston as he deals with a plethora of patients who arrive in his office with more baggage than Paris Hilton on a world tour. These include Laura (Melissa George), who’s in love with the doc, and Alex (Blair Underwood), a tortured navy pilot who mistakenly took out a clutch of civilians in Iraq.

Weston deals with other people’s problems all week, before unpacking his tortured subconscious on his own therapist Gina (Dianne West).

Each 30-minute episode deals with a particular client – who checks in for return appointments in later episodes – and is set within the thrillingly claustrophobic psychiatrist’s office. So prepare to get sucked into the weird and wonderful lives of In Treatment’s intriguing line-up of characters.
