Misfits
The show about superheroes on community service has won plenty of awards, picking up Baftas for best drama series and best supporting actress for Lauren Socha, who stars as the stroppy Kelly. Everyone’s foul-mouthed favourite Nathan left after Series 2, but the show is as original and outrageous as ever.

This Is England '86This Is England ’86
If you enjoyed Channel 4’s This Is England ’88 recently, discover the first series set during the summer of 1986 when the nation was on tenterhooks as England progressed through the World Cup. The four-part drama about a crowd of party-loving young mods is comic and hard-hitting in equal measure.
This Is England ’86 is available On Demand from 28 December


Downton Abbey

This landmark drama about English aristocrats and their servants recently won a host of Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Supporting Actress for Dame Maggie Smith as the acid-tongued dowager countess. Series 1 of the period drama is truly addictive TV so don’t be surprised if your visit to Downton lasts longer than you planned.

Gavin & Stacey
This BBC comedy has picked up Baftas and British Comedy Awards, which is hardly surprising given its ensemble cast includes James Corden, Rob Brydon and Ruth Jones. There’s huge affection for this feelgood romantic comedy, in which a new long-distance relationship between a couple in Essex and Cardiff also brings their family and friends together for comical scenes at weddings, birthday parties and Christmas.
Gavin & Stacey Series 1-3 is available On Demand from 1 January

Don’t be surprised if your visit to Downton lasts longer than you planned

The Big Bang Theory
This US sitcom about a woman living next door to flat-sharing scientists has deservedly won Emmys and a Golden Globe. The Big Bang Theory is a top-notch comedy about total geekdom. But there’s also a relationship drama at the heart of the show that adds romance to the social awkwardness.

Doctor WhoDoctor Who
The Time Lord in the TARDIS has bagged plenty of gongs, including Baftas and National Television Awards, since he returned to our screens in 2005. If you enjoyed the latest festive special, here’s a chance to go back to the beginning and watch Doctor Who Series 1-4, starring Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant in this iconic role.

The Office – An American Workplace
Ten years on from the original British show, the US remake of The Office is still going strong after several series, as well as Emmy awards and a Golden Globe for Steve Carell. In the fourth series, Michael Scott and his team are coping with technological change at the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company.

Small IslandSmall Island
Based on the best-selling novel about Jamaican immigrants adapting to English life in 1948, this acclaimed two-part BBC miniseries picked up an International Emmy and Naomie Harris (pictured, left) was named Best Actress in the Royal Television Society Programme Awards. Benedict Cumberbatch also stars in this sumptuous, moving drama.
Small Island is available On Demand

Also look out for award-winning actress Brenda Blethyn as the dogged Geordie detective Vera. The ITV police drama is available On Demand now.
