Watch Lewis Hamilton on Vision Sport now
On Motorsport Mundial 14 November – available now in Vision Sport – Lewis Hamilton talks about his triumphant Formula One season. What better time, then, to launch the Lewis Hamilton Awards? Celebrating the best, worst and most controversial moments of the young driver’s season, accompanied by Fernando Alonso’s reaction to each event.
Lewis Hamilton award for fast starts
Australia is traditionally a graveyard for the hopes of Britain’s sports people, the 2003 rugby World Cup team aside. But Hamilton took the rulebook, ran over it, backed up on it for good measure and then rolled down his window and flung it into the Pacific like an apple core. In Melbourne he took pole position in the season’s first grand prix, dominated the race and walked off with a large wheel-shaped winner’s trophy. Not a bad way to start.
Fernando Alonso facial expression: Raised eyebrows – “It’s early days”
Lewis Hamilton award for fearless overtaking
The British driver is well known for his brave, some may say reckless, manoeuvres, to such an extent that you suspect he could probably cut it on London’s south circular road system. There were plenty of exhilarating examples of his prowess this season, no more so than at the German grand prix where he squeezed past Felipe Massa and then Nelson Piquet Jr, cutting inside the race leader on a hairpin bend, in the final ten laps to win the race.
Fernando Alonso facial expression: Shocked incredulity – “This is not possible”
Lewis Hamilton award for losing a race you’ve already won
Like a boy racer who crashes trying to catch up with the Ford Escort in front Hamilton’s aggression did him no favours at the Belgium Grand Prix. Having won the race courtesy of a manoeuvre which involved sending Kimi Raikkonen spinning off, he was later stripped of the victory. A 25-second penalty left him in third place.
Fernando Alonso facial expression: Ecstatic child-like giggling – some dribbling spotted
Lewis Hamilton award for annoying Fernando Alonso
Like a spoilt child who tries to put his newborn sibling in the oven Fernando Alonso really didn’t like it when Hamilton came on the scene. And his simmering anger overflowed like soup cooked for too long in the microwave as the Brit edged towards the world title. With two races remaining the Spaniard said “Without a doubt. If I can help, I’ll help Massa.” Which made Hamilton’s victory even sweeter.
Fernando Alonso facial expression: Evil smirk – crack of thunder heard overhead
Lewis Hamilton award for leaving it late
Overtaking Timo Glock on the last corner of the final race to finish fifth and win the title. Enough said.
Fernando Alonso facial expression: Face obscured by hands – tears reported
Lewis Hamilton award for trying to appear normal despite being a multi-millionaire
Following his world championship win Hamilton didn’t head to Monaco for a night of costly carousing or to Switzerland for some low-tax skiing and chocolate. No, Hamilton - call him Mr Average - took girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls, out to Stevenage, finishing the evening at the local cinema. If the relationship can survive that it can survive anything.
Fernando Alonso facial expression: Respect – “He knows how to treat a lady”
