If you like cars and haven’t heard of World Series by Renault it’s about time you did. You can still see highlights of every race of 2008 so far on BT Vision – including the recent event in Estoril, Portugal. Plus, look out for the final race of the series in Barcelona, available from 30 October.
World Series Formula Renault 3.5
Heaven for anyone who loves the smell of petrol – honestly, you’d find less cars on the M25 at rush hour, and the great thing is there are no traffic jams. In fact, the faster they go the better. You don’t just get one race either. Events are held over a weekend in various locations around Europe where drivers in three categories of car compete over two races to see who can munch up the miles fastest.
Formula Renault 2.0
One step down from Formula Renault 3.5, Formula Renault 2.0 cars are still faster than most things with four wheels and an engine. Here you’ll find the young pups of motor racing pressing their paws hard to the pedals as they attempt to prove they’ve got the speed gene.
Megane Trophy
This competition features touring cars that look a bit like the typical motors you may own. The difference is they’re driven with the carefree abandon of someone who doesn’t have to pay for repairs. Which, of course, racing drivers don’t.
The story so far…
Hey, look the Brits aren’t just good at sailing and cycling, we’re good at car racing too. British team P1 Motorsport are leading the Formula Renault 3.5 teams championship table with their driver Giedo van der Garde so far ahead in the drivers championship he’d have to race the remainder of the season in reverse to be caught.
Cheer up Australians, the Brits aren’t better than you at everything – 19-year-old Aussie Daniel Ricciardo is in the top spot of the Formula Renault 2.0 drivers table, sharing it with Italian teammate Andrea Calderelli who, despite the name, isn’t a girl.
Frenchman Michael Rossi leads the Megane Trophy, but he’s only seven points clear of Belgian Maxime Martin. With one race to go it’s all to drive for.
