England’s footballing relationship with Germany is about as far from a love-in as a cat-fight between two WAGs whose pet chihuahuas were photographed in Heat magazine wearing the same designer earrings. The old rivals went head to head on Wednesday night in Berlin, with the Three Lions snatching victory. And you can enjoy some more the great foes’ classic encounters on Vision Sport.
1966 World Cup final
The 1966 Wembley showpiece is without doubt England’s greatest moment against the Germans. Ironically, the 4-2 win was due in no small part to an Azerbaijani – “Russian” linesman Tofik Bakhramov became a hero on these shores when he awarded England a goal after Geoff Hurst’s shot bounced off the crossbar in the 11th minute of extra time. It was obviously a popular decision with the people of his native Baku too - they named a stadium after him. Safe to say Bakhramov isn’t quite as revered in Germany.

1970 World Cup quarter final
England were 2-0 up and cruising after 50 minutes of their game in Leon, Mexico. Then Peter Bonetti became the inspiration for Heurelho Gomes, Massimo Taibi, Peter Enckelman and other spectacularly error-prone keepers by inexplicably allowing Franz Beckenbauer’s shot to crawl underneath his body. Uwe Seller bagged the equaliser to force the game into extra time, where yoghurt-loving striker Gerd Muller upset the bifidus digestivum levels in English stomachs by volleying the winner.

1990 World Cup semi-final
Gary Lineker once said, “Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win”. No wonder, then, that the jug-eared striker looked so happy when his 80th minute strike forced the game into extra time. By his rationale, the Germans were only assured of victory within the normal period of play. Anyone could win the game in the additional half hour, right? Wrong. The Germans saw out extra time with trademark efficiency, before dispatching four perfect penalties past Peter Shilton. Needless to say England bungled two of theirs to the mulleted relish of Voller, Matthaeus and Co.
