New Zealand have wiped the floor with so many teams this autumn, they could start their own cleaning service. England were the latest side to feel the All Black heat, losing 32-6 in a defeat which capped a horrendous few weeks for new boss Martin Johnson.
Still the All Blacks are one of the most feared rugby nations on earth so there’s no in shame losing to them. Check out some of their greatest victories over Australia on Vision Sport in Six of the Best: New Zealand v Australia and other memorable moments in A Decade of the All Blacks and you’ll see why.
There is, though, shame in getting thrashed at home by each of the big three southern hemisphere sides on successive weekends. But, if you’re an England fan looking for a rugby related reason to smile, remember that New Zealand may well play the best rugby out there in friendlies, but England are the better performers at major tournaments. In the 2007 World Cup, for example, New Zealand were hot favourites. Unfortunately for the Kiwis, no one told France, who knocked the All Blacks out in the quarter-final.
England had no trouble defeating New Zealand’s conquerors in the semi-final, though. The French were humbled in their own back yard and England stormed through to the final where they put up a brave performance against South Africa.
In 2003, England went one better and beat New Zealand’s arch-rivals Australia in the final. You can catch Johnson’s defining moment as England captain, and the Aussie semi-final victory over the All Blacks, On Demand now.
