Get set for some Champions League magic

FOOTBALL’S COME a long way since a couple of scamps threw down their chainmail jumpers for goalposts. Now it’s all floodlights, fanfares, and boots that weigh less than a newborn chick. It’s simply the sexiest sport in town.

So, savour the beautiful game wearing nothing but a come-to-bed smile, as Chelsea face Bayern Munich in the Champions League final live on Sky Sports 1.

And, in anticipation of a night when the Blues plan to put a hex on the Bayern defence, here’s our pick of the Champions League’s most magical moments.

2005 Liverpool v AC Milan
Did the Reds really come back from 3-0 down to beat the Seria A giants on pens? It all seems a bit unlikely. But, if they did, Jerzy Dudek’s impossible extra time double save from Andriy Shevchenko would be the Harry Potterest moment of all.

2011 Barcelona v Man United
Back before we decided Barca were only slightly less annoying than the little spinning disk on our computers, we drooled over their carousel football, that bewitched, befuddled, and beslaughted Man United 3-1 at Wembley.

2002 Real Madrid v Bayer Leverkusen
Luckily for Materazzi Zinedine Zidane headbutted him, and didn’t smash him with the sort of roundhouse left-footer that caught Roberto Carlos’ terrible lofted cross and sent the ball zinging into the Leverkusen net for a goal to make you go ‘what the…’

1999 Man United v Bayern Munich
United fans had the fat lady gagged and tied to a radiator as Bayern led 1-0 and time ticked away as it does. Then, in three extra time minutes, the goaly trinity of corner-taker Beckham and scorers Sheringham and Solksjaar turned the footie world upside down.

2011 Inter Milan v Schalke
Schalke may have duffed up Inter 5-2 at the San Siro, but footie fans mostly remember the moment when Nerazurri midfielder Dejan Stankovic put the awe in audacious with a volleyed goal from half way that defied 14 laws of physics.
