Edgar vs Penn – they’ve met before and they’ll meet again at UFC 118. Last time out, Frankie Edgar created a huge upset, defeating BJ Penn by unanimous decision to capture the UFC lightweight championship. And the man nicknamed ‘The Answer’ is determined the result will be the same this time around. Watch it live on ESPN on 29 August.
“The fighter that I am will present a challenge for BJ,” says Edgar, who is considered a long shot to defeat Penn despite his victory in April. “I don’t think you can say, ‘I’m going to be able to beat [Penn] standing’, because if I say I have the advantage standing, for sure he’s going to look to take it to the ground. If he has the advantage standing, I’ll be looking to take it to the ground. BJ can do it all. I just have to be well versed in everything.”
Although Penn is a firm favourite to avenge his defeat, ‘The Prodigy’ is remaining tight-lipped. If little has been heard from Camp Penn, Edgar is as happy to talk up his chances as he is to acknowledge the huge challenge his faces.
“I’m going to have to bring the same intensity I did in the first fight because I know BJ will be bringing the big guns for this one,” the New Jersey native told fightline.com. “But it’s going to be great fighting on the east coast. These are fantastic fans and I know how passionate they are about MMA [mixed martial arts]. I’m training for every possible scenario and I know BJ is too.”
