Scotland welcomed Diego Maradona’s Argentina to Hampden Park on Wednesday evening and, somewhat predictably, they lost. But only just. You can enjoy the past glories of both countries in Vision Sport’s collection of classic football.
Having only played three matches against each other (Scotland having won one, lost one and drawn one) there is very little history between the two teams. But arguably the most successful period for both sides came between the late 1970s and mid-1980s. Scotland didn’t quite match the two World Cup victories of Argentina – no surprise there – but the fact they actually qualified for the tournament and won a few games means these were heady days for the Tartan Army.
Scotland’s finest moment came in the 1978 World Cup finals, held in Argentina, when they beat eventual finalists Holland (who lost to the hosts) before narrowly missing out on a second round spot. Take a look at both teams’ finest moments in these films:

The likes of Mario Kempes, Daniel Passarella and Jorge Valdano featured heavily for the South Americans, yet none of them came close to making the same impact as Diego Maradona. El Diego was recently given the task of improving the results of the national side despite his controversial career and limited managerial experience. Catch his best – and worst – moments in this colourful documentary.
