If you arrived home from work and found Gordon Brown teaching your children economics in the lounge, before wandering into the kitchen to find  Gordon Ramsay cooking before, finally, heading out to the garden where Wayne Rooney was practising headers, you’d still have experienced less surprises than there were at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

England came into the tournament playing so badly some doubted whether they’d make it through the group stages, let alone beat Australia in the quarter-finals. But nothing galvanises an Englishman more than the thought of a gloating Aussie. Similarly Fiji and Argentina stood up to prevailing rugby wisdom and told it to “pipe down”, while the All Blacks were ambushed by France in Cardiff.
