The 1999 Rugby World Cup was the first of the professional era, which meant the top players were bigger, faster and more skilled than ever before. Watch them cause carnage on Vision Sport.
As usual, the southern hemisphere nations were stronger than reinforced concrete. Jonah Lomu was in his defence-trampling prime for New Zealand, South Africa were defending champions and Australia had more stars than the Milky Way.
From the north, England, with a young fly-half who seemed to have a bit of potential called Jonny Wilkinson, and flamboyant France were serious contenders.
There were some great games, including England’s death by drop-goal at the hands of the Springboks, a shock Les Bleus victory over perennial chokers New Zealand and a nail-biting semi-final in which Australia overcame South Africa after extra time, before going on to beat France in the final.
