Great Britain’s track cyclists got their wheels in motion on day one of the BT Paralympic World Cup while the wheelchair basketball teams had to get through some tricky opening fixtures.
At the Manchester Velodrome Paralympic cyclists Darren Kenny and Rik Waddon are in with a chance of winning a medal after qualifying for the 3km individual pursuit finals, but it was a disappointing day for Simon Richardson who just missed out.
Elsewhere, the future looks bright for the GB women’s wheelchair basketball team who fielded five teenagers in their first international fixture, including 14-year-old Maddie Thompson. The youngsters seemed destined to make a winning start to the competition when they led Mexico going into the fourth quarter. But in the end their opponents were too strong and GB lost the pool match 37-41. Later on, they also suffered a narrow 46-48 defeat to the impressive Chinese.
There were high hopes for the men, who went into the tournament as Paralympic bronze medallists. But after being defeated by GB in the final match in Beijing, the USA got their own back by winning 63-41. Meanwhile, Paralympic champions Australia got their campaign off to a successful start, beating Germany 62-51.
