Will Young’s new album: “the sound of an artist truly hitting their stride”

“Let it Go is exactly what you might expect from a fourth Will Young album, said Paul Flynn in the Observer.

“But now it comes with meaning. Elegantly conceived, the slouchy semi-soul grooves are etched with mainstream radio in mind.”

High praise indeed for the latest album from the surprise winner of 2002’s Pop Idol, whose version of Westlife’s Evergreen saw him beat front-runner Gareth Gates to the crown — and also scored him his first number one single.

Young, who boasts two number one albums and three chart-topping singles, has come a long way in six years.

Not only has he garnered critical acclaim for his music while remaining resolutely tied to his pop principles, he has also branched out into other areas.

He was nominated for a Bafta for his role in the Judi Dench-helmed musical, Mrs Henderson Presents, and wowed the critics playing Nicky Lancaster in Noel Coward’s play The Vortex.

For his new album, Will enlisted the help of Spice Girls songwriter Biff Stannard.

It’s a relationship that obviously worked well, with Music Week saying: “Let It Go is the sound of an artist truly hitting their stride, dishing up a bevy of classy, commercial songs that possess the timeless quality of the pop classics.”

This month on BT Vision, you can celebrate the release of Will’s new album with a selection of his best music videos, including the classic All Time Love and the single that made him famous, Evergreen.

You can also see the video for Leave Right Now, which beautifully captures the heartbreak of bumping into your ex at a party – something most of us can relate to.
