“A sprightly four piece armed with their parents’ record collection and stage school training might not make for the coolest of rock ‘n’ roll bands,” said The Guardian in 2006 of the then-fledgling Kooks. “But they certainly make for one of the most proficient.”
The band - who The Guardian went on to describe as a mini-pops Razorlight (”all messy hair and sweaty rock nonchalance”) - released a cheerful debut album, Inside In/Inside Out, amid much optimism.
Two years on, that record has sold almost two million copies worldwide.
“There is promise here for further greatness,” suggested The Guardian, “and, more importantly, future depth.”
Later this month, they release their new album, Konk. Their debut comprised songs like Ooh La, and this latest clearly strives to repeat such winning, if simplistic, tricks: one track here is called Fa La La La La.
On BT Vision now, you can see videos of their biggest hits - Naive and She Moves In Her Own Way - as well as their new single, Always Where I Need To Be.
The boy who for so long wanted to be a rock star, Kooks singer Luke Pritchard looks likely now to live out his dream.
“In the final song of the night,” said The Independent of a Kooks live show, “Pritchard even risked venturing into the crowd like a rock star, held up by fans’ outstretched arms as he sang. It couldn’t possibly be an act. It’s real.”
