Starsailor never were your typical indie act. The band that Q magazine once hailed as the most celebrated new band of the year were much more introspective than most.
“I always wanted to be a respected singer and held in high esteem,” singer James Walsh admits. “But whenever I dreamed about being a frontman, I never quite realised the responsibility it would bring.”
The man’s perpetual frown did wonders for their music. Starsailor’s first two albums, Love Is Here and Silence Is Easy (the latter partly produced by Phil Spector) were artful exercises in navel gazing, while 2005’s On The Outside proved to be their darkest one to date.
They now return with another album, All The Plans, enhanced by input from The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood.
“We kept asking Ronnie if he’d be up for playing some guitar on the record,” Walsh told The Guardian. “At the time he was busy promoting [the Rolling Stones documentary] Shine A Light.”
“Then I got a call from his son saying, ‘My dad really wants to do this now. Can you be at the studio at nine o’clock?’”
Wood contributes to the title track, which reminded him of Maggie May.
