As the video for their latest single All The Small Things continues to storm Vision Music, we talk to quiff-tastic pop duo Jedward about Barney the Dinosaur, Rocky Balboa and having hair like Elvis…
What’s the new vid all about?
John: It’s a cover of Blink 182’s All The Small Things. The video is parody of Beyonce’s Single Ladies, Lady Gaga’s Telephone, Jordin Sparks’ SOS, and Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time. It’s a really fun video.
Edward: Everyone’s going to be really shocked because it’s so big. We directed it! We made these really cool telephone hats by smashing up telephones and sticking them to Michael Jackson hats. We filmed it before I hurt my leg at T4 On The Beach, just in case fans think I made a really quick recovery!
What’s your favourite music video?
J: A lot of people say Michael Jackson’s Thriller, but I think Bad is my favourite, it’s great. “Shomone! You know it!” We’ve got all the albums and EPs Michael released. We love him.
E: I love Elvis videos, like Jailhouse Rock. He was so cool. You know, I think our hair is really like Elvis’ hair! No one’s ever compared us to Elvis. I think with male singers, it’s all about having cool hair. Justin Bieber, Elvis, The Beatles – they all have great hair…
You guys put on an energetic live show. How do you psyche yourselves up for a big performance?
J: We get really, really excited and motivated and give each other a high five before we go on stage. We’ll run on the spot and jump up and down to get ourselves ready.
E: Before we go on stage, we get into lock-down zone. We do some Rocky Balboa punches and stuff! We have to be on a different planet when we’re under the spotlight!
What’s your favourite TV show?
J: When I get back from touring I like watching Friends and The Simpsons, anything that makes me laugh. Comedy shows are great. And we check out music videos all the time.
Do you argue about who’s in charge of the remote control?
E: I remember we’d always be losing the remote control. Then our granddad would always be giving out to us about losing it. I’d always win in the remote control fight, I had better technique than John I think.
What programmes did you watch when you were younger?
J: Arr, we used to watch everything – cartoons, like Top Cat; Disney movies…
E: I used to love watching Sesame Street. All the US stars would make an appearance on it – that’s how we got to know some of them. Maybe we could make a cameo on Sesame Street? That would be out there. I used to love Barney the Dinosaur too.
What’s your favourite film of all time?
J: I like funny films that everyone can watch – you want to see them over and over again. I don’t like scary movies because you tend to come out of them feeling distraught! I love Toy Story and Home Alone.
E: I love Titanic. Every time I watch it I cry!
You’ve had a taste of the red carpet treatment. What’s the best film premiere you’ve been to?
J: We went to the new Twilight film and Get Him To The Greek. It never seems to be our premiere, but there are always fans there for us. At those two premieres, there were 200 Jedward fans waiting for us. When the actual star turns up they stick Jedward stickers all over them. At Get Me To The Greek, Russell Brand was covered in them! Our fans are so dedicated.
Justin Bieber has crazy fans just like yours. Do you reckon your fans could help you beat him in a chart battle?
J: It’s kind of crazy, because a lot of our fans are Justin Bieber fans. He’s a worldwide star, but I think if we got ourselves out there, we could definitely do it.
Who has the better hair?
E: Well, me and John’s hair, we can do loads with it – we can have an Elvis quiff, we can go all spiky, we can wash it and it goes silky and smooth and we can flick it all over the place. Yeah. Our hair is better!
The X-Factor starts up again soon. Are you looking forward to the new series?
J: I think it’s gonna be pretty cool. We’re touring in August, September and October, so we might miss some episodes.
E: They’re going to be looking for the next Jedward, you know, the next phenomenon… This year’s all about who’s going to live up to our reputation!
Who was your favourite judge?
J: It’d have to be Simon Cowell. After every show, he gave me a high five! Louis is cool as well, because he’s our mentor and friend and he gives us loads of advice.
E: Yeah, Simon would always be really nice to us backstage, then on the show he’d say “I don’t like you!” like a pantomime villain!
Who’s the most famous person you’ve met?
J: It would have to be Paul McCartney. We hung out with him for 40 minutes backstage and got to meet his family – he was really cool and down to Earth. We have all the original Beatles records and everything – we’re big fans!
E: We met Janet Jackson as well, she’s amazing!
