Yes, Coldplay may have sold more albums and Girls Aloud more singles, but 2008 has been an unreserved success for the man called Basshunter, whose sparky Euro-dance has generated more sunshine than July and August combined.
Born Jonas Erik Altberg 24 years ago in Sweden, this former DJ capitalised on some early European success by forcefully launching himself in the UK with his plinky-plonk dance tunes (imagine the sound of Alka-Seltzer being dropped into water, then add helium bpms) now re-recorded with English vocals.
The result was pretty much an instant number one in Now You’re Gone, and suddenly Basshunter was the sound of the summer.
Not particularly a shy or retiring man, Altberg’s cheekbones then catapulted him towards pop stardom, and in the Daily Mirror earlier this year he stated that he was setting his sights on the A list.
“I’d now like to work with Madonna and Robbie Williams,” he confessed, “because they are great entertainers, and legends.”
We’re celebrating his chart-topping year with his biggest hits on Vision MUSIC: All I Ever Wanted, Angel In The Night, and the unstoppable Now You’re Gone.
There’s also his latest single, I Miss You, a song whose video takes the essence of Wham!’s Last Christmas — secluded cottage, festive snow — but dresses everybody in bikinis.
In Basshunter’s world, it’s always steamy.
