The success of High School Musical has been so absolute and world-conquering that it’s easy to forget the phenomenon’s humble beginnings.

Just three years ago, the original film was a made-for-TV movie on the Disney channel. But the success of the merchandising and the many sing-along hits has sent its popularity sky high.
