British female singers
Having swept the board at the Grammys last week, taking home no less than six awards, Adele‘s incredible year continued with a double-whammy at the BRITS. The Londoner pipped Jessie J and Florence and the Machine to the British Female Solo Artist gong and also won Best British Album for her multi-million selling record, 21.
International stars
The BRITs isn’t just about homegrown talent – a host of major non-UK stars were up for awards on the night, including Best International Breakthrough Artist Lana Del Rey, Best International Male Bruno Mars (pictured) and Best International Female Rihanna. Elsewhere, Foo Fighters won International Group. You can check out videos from other overseas nominees Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, David Guetta, and Maroon 5 on Vision Music now.
Male solo artists
Ed Sheeran has been another of the year’s success stories, and he was rewarded with the awards for Best British Male and Best British Breakthrough. Check out videos from other British male nominees James Morrison, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Professor Green.
British bands
Guitar bands have triumphed in the British Group category in recent years – until Take That finally nabbed this award in 2011. The 2012 contest was once again dominated by rock, though, as Coldplay edged out Arctic Monkeys, Elbow and Kasabian to scoop the gong. Dance act Chase and Status were also in contention. Meanwhile, boy band One Direction walked away with Best British Single for What Makes You Beautiful.
New talent
The BRITs is also about the stars of tomorrow, and soulful newcomer Emeli Sandé was announced as the Critics’ Choice Award for 2012. Check out her video for the hit Heaven and see if you think she’s a worthy winner, along with Critics’ Choice runners-up Maverick Sabre and Michael Kiwanuka.
And don’t forget indie-rock veterans Blur, who were the Outstanding Contribution winners for 2012.
