“One of the great characters of gaming,” is how Stephen Wapshott summed up Sega’s super-speedy mascot Sonic The Hedgehog in The Times.
Sonic has recently been voted the most popular video game character in the UK, seeing off his rival Super Mario by a comfortable majority.
Sonic X is an all-action Japanese anime based on the heroic hog’s world-beating games.
All of the regulars — Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Cream — are present and correct, with additional interest provided by Chris, a young boy who dreams of growing up to be like Sonic.
“Starting off as a video game for the Sega Megadrive in 1991, the fast little hedgehog has starred in numerous video games through the years, as well as comic books, a music CD and children’s books,” said John Sinnott of DVD Talk.
He forgot to mention the chocolate treats, lampshades, bedcovers, slippers and, yes, the Sonic soap dish.
The Sonic X action kicks off in high gear when, after exposure to the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic is re-born as Super Sonic and must face Chaos, a shape-shifting water creature — all while getting to know a couple of new characters, Big The Cat and Froggy.
As ever, Sonic and chums must collect the powerful Chaos Emeralds in order to save the world from Dr Eggman, an orange-moustachioed evil genius who plots to establish an evil empire with his robots.
“One of the biggest stars in the video-game firmament,” said Steven Poole in The Sunday Times.
