Son Of Rambow on Vision FILM on demand“A potentially disposable, tongue-in-cheek First Blood pastiche turns out to be a deeply effective, surprisingly touching tale of family and childhood friendship,” said Empire.

“If you only see one Rambo movie this year, make sure it’s this one.”

A charmingly nostalgic film about kids in awe of celluloid, Son of Rambow is the newest film from Garth Jennings, the energetic British director who recently brought new life to The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy.

Growing up fatherless in a strictly religious sect, Will (Bill Milner) is something of an outsider until he befriends Lee Carter (Will Poulter), a kid teetering on the wrong side of the tracks.

Lee enrols Will as stuntman in the film he is trying to make one hazy summer, and together they embark on a journey of self-discovery.

“Charm and the natural performances of its two young protagonists are the keynotes of Garth Jennings’s pleasing, if uneven film,” said the Evening Standard.

“The eccentricity he brought to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is carried over here, and though some have dubbed it the new Billy Elliot, it hasn’t the consistency of that film, and not quite enough of the flair.”

Nevertheless, this is a wonderfully evocative tribute to friendship.

“A likeable, lightly sticky valentine to childhood, the 1980s and the dawning of movie love,” said the New York Times.

“It’s full of oddballs and outcasts, whose eccentricities, pluck and fundamental good cheer have long been staples of British screen comedy.”
