There Will Be Blood

“This is an old-fashioned beast of a film,” said The Times of this epic about an oil prospector at the turn of the 20th century, “and a biblical parable about America’s failure to square religion and greed.”
“But most of all it is a marvellously entertaining soap, a sort of Dickens does Dallas.”
Directed by one of Hollywood’s most visionary filmmakers, Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood is a masterpiece of poise and drama.
Day-Lewis (pictured above) plays Daniel Plainview, a man who struggles to make a living finding oil until the day he unexpectedly strikes it lucky in the parched Californian desert.
Determined to milk this land of its black gold irrespective of its dwellers’ own intentions, he comes into conflict with the town’s priest, Eli Sunday (Paul Dano).
“This is a dark, uncompromising film, thrillingly original and distinctive and with a visionary passion,” proclaimed the Guardian.
“It is a movie against which all directors and moviegoers will want to measure themselves. Paul Thomas Anderson is doing something new with cinema, and you can hardly ask for more than that.”
Central to the movie is Day-Lewis himself, who dominates every reel of the film with a determination and greed so steely and unwavering that it is impossible to take your eyes from him.
“Beholden to no genre,” said the Daily Telegraph, “scourged free of irony, ferociously true to itself, it is a modern classic - an unhinged masterpiece.”
