“For a film besotted with its adventure yarns,” began the Daily Telegraph of the sweet, child-friendly film Nim’s Island, “it’s curiously uninterested in sound storytelling.”
“But though the movie gets plainly silly, at least it’s lively, and young girls will enjoy Nim’s lifestyle in her eco-friendly and frolic-packed tropical paradise.”
It centres on a young girl called Nim (Abigail Breslin), who accompanies her scientist father to an isolated island in the South Pacific. Her life is suddenly thrown into turmoil when he is apparently lost at sea.
For much of the remainder of the film, Nim communicates electronically with a person she imagines to be a character from a book but is in fact a reclusive author.
“Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin isn’t just a smiley face here,” wrote BBC Films, “but a gutsy heroine who lives in the jungle, eats bugs for dinner and Australian tourists for breakfast.”
“It’s like a junior version of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, only without the whining.”
Co-starring heavyweight actor types like Jodie Foster and Gerard Butler star of 300), Nim’s Island may well be chiefly directed towards children — but there are enough solid performances here to make this a firm family favourite.
“Jodie Foster is deftly fine here,” confirmed Empire magazine, “reminding us that she can do something other than intense, and for adult viewers she is the one who carries the movie.”
