“In Search Of A Midnight Kiss was crafted by the enterprising writer/director Alex Holdridge,” wrote The Times of this charming indie flick that puts love under the microscope.

“He had little more than a micro-budget, a charismatic cast, some whip-smart dialogue and the unexpectedly photogenic backdrop of downtown LA in winter.”

The result, said the Guardian, is “a sweet, funny little indie movie.”

Wilson (Scoot McNairy) is a 29-year-old who has just had the worst year of his life.

New to Los Angeles, he posts a personal ad on a lonely hearts website, and it’s here that he meets Vivian (Sara Simmons) — who might just prove to be the woman to rescue him.

“Shot in black-and-white throughout,” continued the Guardian, “and unashamedly romantic, this is a charming and seductive piece of work.”

“As the sunrise smog rises over the Hollywood sign, the only familiar landmark in the director’s otherwise cleverly chosen alien streetscapes,” said the Financial Times, “we realise we have spent 100 captivated minutes rollercoasting through everything we knew about first love that we’d been too frightened to even try to remember.”

Romantic comedies may well be ten-a-penny these days, but this is undoubtedly one of the more cherishable ones — a film unafraid to wear its emotional vulnerability and bitter honesty on its sleeve.

“Lovingly photographed in a monochrome that recalls Woody Allen’s Manhattan, this is slickly scripted,” wrote Empire.

The Sun concluded that, “if you are looking for some smouldering passion, then this is a real lip-smacker.”
