“An author’s vision is seldom captured as delightfully on film as by this CGI escapade,” wrote The Times on this fine adaptation of the Dr Seuss classic, Horton Hears A Who!
“Barmy but indisputably original, Seuss is here artfully translated to the silver screen… a treat.”
It is certainly original. On hearing a cry emanate from a speck of dust, Horton, a sweet natured and imaginative elephant (voiced by Jim Carrey), discovers that the particle is home to a civilisation of ‘Whos’.
Horton then assumes the responsibility of protecting them — but along with his friends, including an erratic kangaroo, ends up introducing the speck into a world fraught with danger.
“Horton is ultimately two very different cartoons run together in the washing machine,” decided BBC Films.
“One features typical Seussian rhyming couplets, a sweetly absurd sense of humour and a brain-boggling concept. The other has Jim Carrey doing Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonations and features endless pop culture riffs.”
It added, however, that this “anarchic slapstick is occasionally inspired, and very charming indeed.”
Cute enough for kids, but deliciously weird for adults, Horton Hears A Who! is a genuinely rare Hollywood success in that it appeals to everyone equally, but for very different reasons.
“There are enough film nods to keep the most impatient of parents quiet,” wrote Empire.
“This is charming, funny, and has great turns from a great cast — but if you don’t like psychosis-inducing imagery, steer clear.”
