She’s beautiful, talented and as close to universally popular as a movie star can get. But there’s a few things about Halle Berry — the star of haunting drama Things We Lost In The Fire, coming off your V-box this Sunday — that you might not know.

She has English roots
Although born in Cleveland, Ohio, Berry’s mother was born and raised in Liverpool and her maternal grandmother was from Sawley in Derbyshire. Whether this makes her partial to a bowl of scouse or a Bakewell tart is unknown.

She’s named after a shop
Before she was born, Berry’s mother moved to Cleveland and liked the local department store — the now defunct Halle Brothers — so much that she named her daughter after it. It’s a good job she didn’t move to New York: Bloomingdales Berry doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.

She’s Hollywood’s most accident-prone actress
Berry has suffered more on-set injuries in her career than a team of untrained stunt men. She’s suffered serious eye infections twice (Die Another Day and X-Men) and other injuries include a broken arm (Gothika) and concussion (Catwoman). She also managed to break her toe while rushing to catch a plane for a promotional tour of X-Men.

She once didn’t shower for a week
Despite being consistently listed as one of the world’s most beautiful and well-dressed women, Berry didn’t shower or change her clothes for a week when preparing for her breakthrough role as a drug addict in Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever. It’s safe to say that she stank nearly as much as she did in Catwoman, for which she won a Razzie Award for worst actress in 2004.

She turned down some of the biggest roles of the ’90s
Some of the roles Berry could have taken in the 1990s would have made her a megastar much earlier in her career. Instead, her questionable decision-making aided the careers of Sandra Bullock (Speed), Demi Moore (Indecent Proposal) and Angela Bassett (What’s Love Got To Do With It). However, it appears her judgement has improved in recent years - she also turned down the lead role in 2003’s Gigli, which is a regular on ‘Worst Movie Of All Time’ lists everywhere.
