Drillbit Taylor: comedy from That Knocked Up Guy

Drillbit Taylor on Vision FILM on demand“This film struck me,” wrote the Financial Times, “as a funny tale of three schoolboys, thin, fat and nerdy respectively, who hire a charlatan war veteran as their bodyguard.”

“I laughed, but then I got out of school without the scars.”

Bolting from the same stable that brought you The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up comes Drillbit Taylor, a scabrously funny high school comedy about what happens when you stand up to the class bully.

In this case, the Neanderthal Filkins (Alex Frost) clearly has aspirations towards Hannibal Lecter status.

But our three heroes (played by relative newcomers Nate Hartley, Troy Gentile and Ian Roberts) club together to hire themselves some protection.

Enter the laconic but ever lovable Owen Wilson, with his own unique twist on exactly how to provide protection.

“There are some good lines in the film,” conceded the Daily Telegraph.

“But they are exceptions, and too much of the dialogue, like the direction, is flat and uninspired. All told, a bitter letdown.”

But though it may not work its way into your heart like Knocked Up did, Drillbit Taylor still has many amusing moments, and relates every last one of them with a clear flair for comedy.

“Drillbit Taylor has a whiff of familiarity about it,” said The Times.

“It is packed with movie references and pop cultural in-jokes, and though it is perhaps not as uproariously funny as some of their other scripts, fans of Judd Apatow and Seth Rogan will not be disappointed.”
