Hollywood heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe clash spectacularly in Body Of Lies, the new cinema release that Village Voice called “the sharpest of all the post-9/11 thrillers”. But we’ve got some pretty meaty acting altercations of our own.
1. Colin Farrell vs Ralph Fiennes
The film: In Bruges, a modern twist on the British gangster movie that sees two hit men lying low in an ancient Belgian town to evade the police back home following a botched job.
The clash: In the final face off – a tense shoot out – Farrell faces his gangster boss, Ralph Fiennes. “Fiennes’ performance is something to be savoured,” said Empire. “Harry is the true snake amid this already unsavoury ensemble.”
2. Casey Affleck vs Ed Harris
The film: Gone Baby Gone. When a four-year-old girl goes missing, detectives Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) and Angie Gennaro are brought in by the child’s aunt and uncle.
The clash: In Gone Baby Gone’s most gripping confrontation, Affleck is on the wrong end of a botched hold up with the intimidating Remy Bressant (Ed Harris).
3. Briana Evigan vs Channing Tatum
The film: Step Up 2: The Streets, where snappy moves abound as a group of dance school students play truant to make their mark among the edgy dancers on the streets.
The clash: One of the most impressive and inventive dance-offs takes place on a dance floor featuring a built-in trampoline. Variety said, “this film is all about new moves, which should keep the kids coming back.”
4. George Clooney vs John Krasinski
The film: Leatherheads, a screwball comedy in which George Clooney plays an American Footballer determined to save his team – and the sport in general – from financial ruin.
The clash: When the pair both fall for the charms of Lexie Littleton, an attractive reporter played by Renee Zellweger, the only way to settle things is with a good old-fashioned scrap.
5. Robert De Niro vs Joe Pesci
The film: Raging Bull, Martin Scorsese’s classic biopic of Jake LaMotta, which tells the story of a temperamental boxer who alienates himself from friends and family. “A fiercely poetic study of violence,” said Rolling Stone.
The clash: Of the eight fight scenes the tensest is when an eerily soulless De Niro invites Joe Pesci to punch him in the face. What’s more, the punches are real: as a method actor, De Niro insisted that Pesci didn’t hold back.
6. Russell Brand vs Jason Segal
The film: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, in which struggling musician Peter Bretter (Jason Segal) meets his ex-girlfriend and her new beau (Russell Brand) on holiday in Hawaii. “A film of glorious moments and memorable scenes, lovingly crafted characters and sparkling one-liners,” said Time Out.
The clash: The comedic squabbles between Brand and Segal reach boiling point when the pair become involved in a water-bound fight on surf boards. Brand’s hilarious dialogue is largely improvised.
7. Jason Scott Lee vs Sven-Ole Thorsen
The film: Dragon — The Bruce Lee Story follows Bruce Lee’s journey to America and rise to success following his battle with personal demons to become a cultural icon.
The clash: High-kicking, quick punching martial arts from Bruce Lee’s own son as he fights Sven-Ole Thorsen playing a mysterious demon at the climax of the film.
