Appiah in Redknapp’s sights

Ghana midfielder Stephen Appiah is in the frame to become Harry Redknapp's first signing of the transfer window, after training with Tottenham.

Appiah, who has been a free agent since the summer following a dispute with Turkish side Fenerbahce, looks set to be offered a deal until the end of the season.

The 28-year-old has suffered knee injuries in the past, but Redknapp is confident that will not be a problem and is hoping to arrange a deal.

Villanueva puts Rovers through

Chilean midfielder Carlos Villanueva scored the only goal of the game to save Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce further misery in the north-east as Blyth's latest FA Cup fairytale very nearly lived on.

Villanueva curled home a superb 59th-minute free-kick to finally break Spartans' stubborn resistance on a night when Allardyce's squad players were given a real test in Northumberland.

Indeed, had substitute Andrew Wright's 85th-minute shot been directed six inches more to his right, he and his team-mates would have been heading for Ewood Park and a replay their bravery so richly deserved.

Pompey suffer Papa blow

Portsmouth midfielder Papa Bouba Diop has been ruled out for three months with a knee injury.

The Senegalese strained ligaments in his right knee while attempting to make a challenge in Pompey's Barclays Premier League defeat at Arsenal on December 28.

And after visiting a consultant, head physio Gary Sadler confirmed on Monday that the former Fulham enforcer will be out for a minimum of 12 weeks, with damage to Diop's posterior cruciate ligament a particular worry.

Tevez unhappy with contract saga

Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez has risked the wrath of Sir Alex Ferguson by reacting to the manager's comments regarding his contract situation.

Tevez, 24, on Sunday revealed his disappointment at speculation that he had rejected a new offer from the Premier League champions, and on Monday he reiterated his desire for his future to be sorted.

"I didn't like him (Ferguson) saying I didn't like the offer I was made because neither my agent nor me were given one," the Argentina international, whose deal runs out in the summer, told Radio del Plata.

Derby admit Clough interest

Derby chairman of football Adam Pearson has confirmed he has contacted Burton about the possibility of Nigel Clough becoming the club's new manager.

Clough, whose late father Brian managed Derby between 1967 and 1973 and led them to the old Division One title in 1972, has been heavily tipped to make the short switch to Pride Park to fill the Rams' vacant managerial post after Paul Jewell resigned a week ago.

"Certainly Nigel has got lots of attributes you look for in a manager and I have spoken to (Burton chairman) Ben Robinson about him," Pearson said.

Boro: Downing’s going nowhere

Middlesbrough confirmed they have received and rejected a transfer request from England winger Stewart Downing.

The 24-year submitted a written transfer request first thing Monday morning in the wake of an improved offer from long-time suitors Tottenham.

Chief executive Keith Lamb said: "We received a written transfer request from Stewart on Monday morning. It was considered before being rejected."

Rodallega set for Wigan

Mexican club Necaxa claim striker Hugo Rodallega is set to join Wigan later this month.

Necaxa have revealed that a deal for the 23-year-old Colombia international has been done, although they refused to disclose any details.

Club spokesman Rosendo Duhart told PA Sport: "It is a fact. Hugo is joining Wigan on January 15."

Kalou: We must not lose United clash

Striker Salomon Kalou admits Chelsea cannot afford to lose to Manchester United in Sunday's Barclays League showdown at Old Trafford.

Kalou, who opened the scoring for the Blues in Saturday's disappointing 1-1 FA Cup third-round draw with Coca-Cola League One Southend, insists they must keep Sir Alex Ferguson's champions behind them in the title race.

"This game is crucial because if they win on Sunday they have the chance to build a lead over us as they have two games in hand as well," said Kalou. "It is important to keep the gap because if you allow United to get in front it's always difficult to catch them."

Hines joins Rams

Derby have signed centre-back Seb Hines on a month's loan from Middlesbrough.

The 20-year-old will be eligible to face Manchester United in the Carling Cup semi-final first leg at Pride Park on Wednesday.

Hines has risen through the youth ranks at Middlesbrough but has made just six first-team appearances and only one this season, in the defeat to Hull last month.
